The Dream Is Still Alive: Cubs / Sox in World Series

At this point, the dream of a Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago Cubs World Series is still alive. I am watching the last game of the year as I write this, Cubs versus the Cardinals. It will probably be over before I finish. Cubs need to win and Milwaukee needs to lose for the Cubs to win the National League Central Division. But they are both winning, so if that doesn't change, Cubs will have to play Milwaukee for the Division Championship tomorrow, game 163.

For the Red Sox, they clinched the American League Eastern Division days ago. They have been playing meaningless games for over a week. It looks like they will finish the year with 108 wins, a team record. That is a .667 winning percentage, the best in all of baseball. That is they win, two out of every three games they've played. This is the seventh best record ever for any team in Major League baseball history. They did all this with one of their stars, Gold Glove second baseman Dustin Pedroia, on the Disabled List (DL) most of the season and their best pitcher, Chris Sale, for part of the season. Because of Pedroia being missing, defense was less than stellar up the middle. They made up for it with hitting and pitching.

It is an incredible year, they have two candidates for MVP with Mookie Betts being the batting champion with a .346 batting average. He also lead the league in slugging percentage and extra bases. JD Martinez is right behind him in batting .329. He lead the league in total bases and runs batted in (RBIs). JD's chances at winning the MVP is less probable because he didn't play the field as much as Mookie or Mike Trout of the Angels who play ever day and are phenomenal.

The Sox have a lot of other standouts with Jackie Bradley Jr. playing Gold Glove caliber outfield and stealing bases at a 94.4% rate (highest in the league). Shortstop Xander Bogaerts had the best year of his career and they have the two best defensive catchers in the league with Vasquez and Leon. Their only soft spot is their bullpen who have been quite shaky late in the year.

The Cubs have the best record in the National League, tied with Milwaukee. They have a potential National MVP in Javier Baez who leads the league in RBIs, but considering what Christian Yellich has done late in the season for Milwaukee, I have no doubt he'll get that honor. Baez may be awarded it because of his defense. Check out this video below of Javy's 2018 defensive highlights. He is undoubtedly the most exciting player on the diamond to watch whether he is batting, fielding the entire infield or stealing home. If MLB is looking for a player to be the face of baseball, here he is.

Cubs have great hitting and pitching but the most impressive aspect of their game is their defense. They may have the best infield in baseball with Bryant and Rizzo on the corners and Javy and Russell in the middle. They tied a record this year by turning seven double plays in one game. Try scoring any runs in that game. It isn't just their infield. They have Jason Heyward in center field with a killer arm.

Either team could easily be eliminated with great teams from Cleveland, Houston and surprisingly Atlanta looking very good about now. Either way, my wife and I will be hoping our fantasy match up: Sox / Cubs with four games in Fenway so that we might get a chance to see one of them live.

Trump Log #63: Merrick Garland Is Still Available #GarlandOrNoOne

During the Kavanuagh hearings Senator Graham went on a tirade about civility, yet when it was his turn, the GOP's turn, to approve a Supreme Court nomination by President Obama, they didn't even hold hearings. You can just add Senator Graham's speech to the long list of hypocrisies committed by the GOP in recent years. Do they think we don't remember? The party that impeaches a president for lying about a consensual blow job, is outraged by an investigation into sexual assault.  What!?

Are the Democrats playing political hardball? Yup! It is about time. Merrick Garland is still available and if Trump is looking for a candidate that he can get confirmed quickly, look no further.

More has come out since the hearing on Thursday and some of it I am just catching up on. Kavanaugh's mentor, Alex Kozinski, is also under investigation for sexual harassment. Kavanaugh's high school wrote a letter to parents in 1990 about a culture of "sexual or violent behavior." The puzzle pieces are falling into place. You just have to put them together to see how guilty he is. His belligerence is another factor.

How belligerent could he be at a Congressional hearing?  He was so rude to Senator Klobuchar, one of the few women to question him.  My guess is that he was performing for Trump, for fear that he would pull his nomination. After his last hearing, Trump called him "weak" on Twitter. His aggression did him no good. He looked like a guilty man, trying hard to feign outrage. He looked like a spoiled brat throwing a tantrum. He in no way looked like someone who is up for the pressure of being a Supreme Court Justice.

His guilt seems so obvious now. He hasn't asked Mark Judge to testify. If he is not guilty, wouldn't he be demanding that his friend go on record and defend him? Wouldn't you? If he had nothing to hide, then why would he want his friend to go before Congress and deny everything?

Trump Log:

Monday September 24th: Rod Rosenstein offered his resignation but apparently, for now, he is not leaving his position in the DOJ. It could just be a matter of days before he is gone. His replacement would mostly like be Solicitor General Noel Francisco, a Trump loyalist. His biggest responsibilities: oversight of the Mueller probe.  (Source: Slate)

Tuesday September 25th: It is truly revolting listening Trump defend Kavanaugh. After the Access Hollywood recording of him bragging about "grabbing pussy" and being able to get away with it, you think he might refrain from bashing these women.  But I guess that is not where we are as a country. (Source: Washington Post)

Wednesday September 26th: Trump speaks before a crowd of diplomats at the UN and they are laugh at him, not with him. (Source: New York Times)

Thursday September 27th: As we gawk at addictive news like the Kavanaugh hearings, let us not forget more important news like what is happening in Yemen. The US government (aka your tax dollars) are helping Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates bomb the shit out of Yemen. We provide supplies, intelligence and aerial refueling. (Source: New York Times)

Friday September 28th: Trump seeks to prevents legal immigrants access to social service programs. This includes health insurance. This will create a public health disaster. (Source: Washington Post)

Saturday September 29th: Kavanaugh's demeanor was attrocious during the hearings. Twelve years ago the BAR Association expressed concern over his demeanor and the Republicans ignored it.  As long as he votes their way, Trump and the rest of the GOP don't care what kind of person they put on the Supreme Court for a life time appointment. Sunday September 30th: Hundreds of undocumented teenagers are being rounded up and shipped to a tent city in Texas in the middle of the night. (Source: Slate)

Trump Log #62: The Gravitational Pull

Trump has a gravitational pull. You meet up with an old friend. You don't want to talk about Trump, but somehow it happens. You hope ... you pray ... you are almost sure ... that they are didn't support him. Phew! You can enjoy yourself.

The Kavanaugh hearing have become the latest satellite in this pull. It is difficult not to talk about it. On one hand, it is difficult to judge someone that they did while they were in high school. This is why we don't try minors as adults. Their brains aren't fully developed. This also why, he should just admit it and we can move on. It is the lie that is the problem. If it is a lie.

Also, it happened 30 years ago. We know that memory is not reliable even in short term situations. This is why we have statutes of limitations. Perhaps no one is lying here. Perhaps we just have the failing memories of two individuals that remember things very differently. If I attempted to rape someone, I'm pretty sure that I'd remember that particular day. Maybe he attempted so many rapes that this one doesn't stand out. I've been to college. I've met guys that like.

If you examine closely at what each of them is saying, it does appear that one of them is lying and it doesn't seem to be Blasey Ford. For one, if she were going to lie about this, would she be claiming it was "attempted" rape?  Don't liars usually go for the extreme? If she were lying, she would be saying he raped her, no "attempted." Also, she is the one calling for an investigation. He is not. If you were being accused of something that you know you were not guilty of, wouldn't you be calling for an investigation as well? He doesn't want an investigation, because he knows he did it.

Let's face it. The old boy network is a disgusting lot. They are privileged fucking brats who think they are entitled to shit all over the world and the rest of us are just here to wipe their asses. The world is here to be their playground. Your pain, your struggles, are only there for their amusement. It makes them feel better about themselves because they have it easy. It is this easiness of their life prevents them from building character. I don't know Kavanaugh, but I know people like him. Whatever we can do to stop someone like him from having a lifetime appointment on a court that is going to dictate how we live for the rest of our lives, we need to do it.

He can't even admit to making a mistake when he was a teenage boy. Surely, he is not adult enough to be a Supreme Court Justice.

Trump Log #61: Daily Deluge

I didn't like George W. Bush as president. At the time, I thought he was the worst president ever. One of the things I really hate Trump for, is that I now I am starting to like Bush. When Bush was president, I wasn't disgusted everyday when I read the news. Bush was quietly incompetent. His presidency was one of long and large travesties: 911, Katrina, two unnecessary wars and then, instead of paying for those wars, he cut taxes. But still each day, when I read my newspaper, it wasn't something new everyday like it is today. I couldn't have come up Bush log if I tried.

Now we have a Daily Deluge of embarrassments and outrages. The president's lie count, while in office, is up over 5,000 lies now. It is really exhausting to stay informed now.

Trump has had his big travesties also (Hurricane Maria and kids in cages), but somehow it seems the worst is yet to come. This is why you need to vote in November. We need a Congress that will control him.

Tuesday, September 11th - Trump's EPA is stepping back on their regulation of methane gas. (Source: New York Times)

Wednesday, September 12th -Trump is transferring $9.8 million away from FEMA to ICE ... just in time for hurricane season. That is shifting money from a badly needed program to pay for his pet project, a non-existent problem. (Source: NPR)

Thursday, September 13th - Trump claims that the Democrats have fabricated the number of deaths from Hurricane Maria in PR last year. He also claims his administration's response was a complete success.  All evidence is to the contrary!  It is not all about him. (Source: Washington Post)

Friday, September 14th - In his first public speech, Trump's new national security adviser, John Bolton, castigated the ICC (International Crime Court). This probably has a lot to do with the amount of war crime that the US is guilty of in the middle east. (Source: TheIntercept)

Saturday, September 15th - Trump's efforts to discourage migrant children coming to our borders is a miserable failure. This month they reached all time high of 12,800. In May 2017, it was as low as 2400. (Source: New York Times)

Sunday, September 16th - Trump's announces a new set of tariff's on China, arguably the toughest restrictions ever by a US president. (Source: Slate)

Trump Log #60: The Shadow Government

Many times Trump has called the New York Times "fake news." If he truly believes this, then why does he care one bit about the anonymous Op Ed that appeared earlier this week. Is calling NYT "fake news" just another one of his lies? Of course it is. Even his opinions are lies to stir up his base of deplorables. I'm not sure there is a person under that pile of lies and affectations. He is more like a ventriloquist dummy with strings being manipulated by his staff, Fox "News" or his, equally disgusting, sons (what are their names Uday and Qusay?).

This happened with Nixon as well. In the final days of his administration, we was having conversations with JFK's portrait and having drunken prayer sessions with Kissinger. Within his own administration, he was circumvented. James Schlesinger, Nixon's Secretary of Defense, told his staff that if they got any orders from the President to check with him first. The president was incapacitated and the public did not know. A shadow government ensued. The difference now is that we do know about it and he has been like this since day one. I am under no delusion that his cabinet will invoke the 25th amendment.  They were hired for their loyalty not their backbones. Unless the Democrats take the Senate, impeachment will do nothing.

If you'd like to be reminded of what a good president looks and sounds like, check out President Obama's recent speech at the University of Illinois and follow his instructions, vote in November.

Trump Log #59: The Real Scandal: The Rubber Stamp Congress

During the campaign for the 2016 election, Trump broke two federal campaign finance laws:

  1. He exceeded the limit that one can contribute to a campaign, in the form of two payments regarding hush money for ex-martial affairs, for $130,000.00 and $150,000.00. The limit is $2,700.00.
  2. His campaign didn't report these contributions.
Based on his lawyer, Michael Cohen's, plea statement under oath, Trump directed Cohen to do so. He directed Cohen to break the law, both felonies. This is a scandal that isn't going to make people riot in the streets. The President can't be indicted while in office. The statute of limitations is five years for this crime. If he completes his first term, prosecutors are going to have to act fast to go after him. If he is reelected and stays in office for at least one year, he will get away with it. So if anyone is wondering if the President is running for reelection ... the answer, of course, is YES.

The real scandal? Congress! Congress is supposed to be a check on the Presidency. During Trump's campaign, other members of the GOP said that they would keep him in check.  When is that going to happen? The Republican run Congress has done nothing to control our President run amok. This is why the mid-term elections are so important. This Rubber Stamp Congress needs to go.

I have no delusions that a Democratic House will impeach him, but it would at least put some controls in place to keep him in check. Impeachment is not a legal solution, but a political one. All that is required to impeach is political will. You can impeach for any reason. Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a blowjob. Andrew Johnson was impeached because, basically, no one liked him. Unless the Democrats take both the House and the Senate, what is the use of impeaching Trump in the House without being able to remove him from office in the Senate? He'd be just like Clinton and Johnson, he'd be impeached but he'd carry out his term to the end.  Only a third of the Senate is being replaced this mid-term election. Mathematically, Democrats could take the Senate but this is not likely.

Trump Log:
Monday 8/27/18 - When members of Congress die in office, flags are generally flown at half-staff for a minimum of 48 hours, usually longer at the President's discretion. For McCain, the flag was returned to full-staff after a very short time. This is a symbolic gesture, showing how little class our President actually has. (Source: Washington Post)

Tuesday 8/28/18 - Further proof that Trump gets his queues from Fox "News," after seeing a report on Fox that Google is biased against right wing organization, his administration is now looking into regulating Google. Since Google's algorithm is tech's most guarded secret, I don't think this is going anywhere. (Source: Washington Post)

Wednesday 8/29/18 - Trump claims that China is responsible for hacking of Hillary Clinton's email server. This is a new twist on an oldie but goody. He's like a rat in a cage. (Source: Washington Post)

Thursday 8/30/18 - If you have brown skin and you are a citizen living near the US/Mexico border, watch out.  You are next! (Source: Washington Post)

Friday 8/31/18 - Trump is threatening to pull out of the WTO (World Trade Organization), the only international trade regulator agency we have. (Source: Bloomberg)

Saturday 9/1/18 - ICE was created after the 9/11 attacks to manager immigration issues in the interior of the country. Under Trump it has grown to be larger than the FBI, DEA and the Marshal service combined. It has become not only powerful, but some might say ... radicalized. (Source: The Atlantic)

Sunday 9/2/18 - The Trump administration is refusing to release documents (over 100,000 pages) concerning Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's time as a White House counsel of President W. Bush. If Congress had any balls, they'd refuse to have hearings of the candidate until the documents were shared. (Source: Slate)
