Trump Log #59: The Real Scandal: The Rubber Stamp Congress

During the campaign for the 2016 election, Trump broke two federal campaign finance laws:

  1. He exceeded the limit that one can contribute to a campaign, in the form of two payments regarding hush money for ex-martial affairs, for $130,000.00 and $150,000.00. The limit is $2,700.00.
  2. His campaign didn't report these contributions.
Based on his lawyer, Michael Cohen's, plea statement under oath, Trump directed Cohen to do so. He directed Cohen to break the law, both felonies. This is a scandal that isn't going to make people riot in the streets. The President can't be indicted while in office. The statute of limitations is five years for this crime. If he completes his first term, prosecutors are going to have to act fast to go after him. If he is reelected and stays in office for at least one year, he will get away with it. So if anyone is wondering if the President is running for reelection ... the answer, of course, is YES.

The real scandal? Congress! Congress is supposed to be a check on the Presidency. During Trump's campaign, other members of the GOP said that they would keep him in check.  When is that going to happen? The Republican run Congress has done nothing to control our President run amok. This is why the mid-term elections are so important. This Rubber Stamp Congress needs to go.

I have no delusions that a Democratic House will impeach him, but it would at least put some controls in place to keep him in check. Impeachment is not a legal solution, but a political one. All that is required to impeach is political will. You can impeach for any reason. Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a blowjob. Andrew Johnson was impeached because, basically, no one liked him. Unless the Democrats take both the House and the Senate, what is the use of impeaching Trump in the House without being able to remove him from office in the Senate? He'd be just like Clinton and Johnson, he'd be impeached but he'd carry out his term to the end.  Only a third of the Senate is being replaced this mid-term election. Mathematically, Democrats could take the Senate but this is not likely.

Trump Log:
Monday 8/27/18 - When members of Congress die in office, flags are generally flown at half-staff for a minimum of 48 hours, usually longer at the President's discretion. For McCain, the flag was returned to full-staff after a very short time. This is a symbolic gesture, showing how little class our President actually has. (Source: Washington Post)

Tuesday 8/28/18 - Further proof that Trump gets his queues from Fox "News," after seeing a report on Fox that Google is biased against right wing organization, his administration is now looking into regulating Google. Since Google's algorithm is tech's most guarded secret, I don't think this is going anywhere. (Source: Washington Post)

Wednesday 8/29/18 - Trump claims that China is responsible for hacking of Hillary Clinton's email server. This is a new twist on an oldie but goody. He's like a rat in a cage. (Source: Washington Post)

Thursday 8/30/18 - If you have brown skin and you are a citizen living near the US/Mexico border, watch out.  You are next! (Source: Washington Post)

Friday 8/31/18 - Trump is threatening to pull out of the WTO (World Trade Organization), the only international trade regulator agency we have. (Source: Bloomberg)

Saturday 9/1/18 - ICE was created after the 9/11 attacks to manager immigration issues in the interior of the country. Under Trump it has grown to be larger than the FBI, DEA and the Marshal service combined. It has become not only powerful, but some might say ... radicalized. (Source: The Atlantic)

Sunday 9/2/18 - The Trump administration is refusing to release documents (over 100,000 pages) concerning Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's time as a White House counsel of President W. Bush. If Congress had any balls, they'd refuse to have hearings of the candidate until the documents were shared. (Source: Slate)
